The Story of a Hairless Bear
A Hairless Bear has a remarkably unique look. The bear, Gici Awas, is almost completely
hairless and looks like a monstrous man eating beast. The term "hairless" is a compound word
meaning "great bear." Some folklorists believe that the name 'Great Hairless Bair' is derived from

After being rescued, the "hairless bear" was found in Butte County, California. Fortunately,
experts quickly identified the bear as black. She was taken in by the Fund for Animals Wildlife
Center, which has named her Eve. She will now live in a new home and be reunited with its
family. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of her natural recovery. But until then, Eve will remain
a permanent resident of the Center's wildlife rehabilitation facility.
The Leipzig zoo is now home to a number of hairless bears. The bears suffer from various
conditions, including sunburn, allergies, and parasite infestation. Although the cause of the hair
loss is not completely understood, some experts believe it is genetic. As a result, the Bear
Foundation of Leipzig will continue to study this phenomenon to help save the lives of bears and
other wildlife. There is no cure for hair loss, but hairless bears have many stories of plight and
hope.
The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, a nonprofit affiliate of the Humane Society of the United
States, became a part of the San Diego Humane Society in 2020. Eve, a hairless bear, spent
nearly two years at the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona, California, recovering from
her severe medical problems. She now lives in a large new home at Cleveland Amory Black
Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas.
Since her ordeal, Eve has grown to 130 pounds and is living a life far from her natural habitat.
She has regrown some of her fur but still doesn't have the skills required for survival in the wild,
and so she can't go back home. At the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, Eve has the luxury of
living in a spacious, luxuriant enclosure. The facility cares for 800 animals, including two former
circus bears.
The mange-afflicted bear was taken in mid-2001 and has appeared in dozens of newspapers
and Web sites. The photographer has received several calls from journalists and wildlife
organizations seeking more information about the bear. A veterinarian named Mark Cunningham
gave a reporter a picture of the hairless bear with mange. The photo makes the bear look like a
giant bald rat. However, the hairless bear is not a dangerous creature.
